Delray Beach, FL - by Courtney Steinberg - Delray Medical Center hosted 84 medical magnet students from Omni Middle School and Boca Raton Middle School to participate in the hospital’s “Day in the Life of a Nurse” program. The children participated in hands-on, educational activities that allowed them to learn about the different aspects of healthcare.
The hospital had nine stations set up for the students to rotate through, including:

  • A patient room set up with CPR mannequins; students received an infant mock choking demonstration
  • An imaging room to look at an X-ray of a broken bone
  • An ambulance brought over by Palm Beach County Fire Rescue
  • A lab with microscopes for the students to look at tissue
  • An OR table where students learned about draping and different instruments
  • Trauma services fitted the students for bike helmets
  • Infection prevention practiced good hand washing techniques and proper use of protective equipment
  • Pinecrest Rehabilitation therapy staff showed students how to use certain equipment during rehabilitation
  • Respiratory therapy talked about the sleep lab, breathing therapy and asthma

Through this program, young students interested in the medical field are able to get an inside look at what it is like to work as a health care professional.
